The more you practice the less fearful it becomes. Sighting Sighting is when you lift your head out of the water to enable you to navigate the course. This sounds like a relatively simple thing to do, but don’t be fooled there is an art to this. TIP: Try swimming lengths with your head out of the water; this helps to give you the strength you need to lift your head out of the water whist maintaining your swimming rhythm. Drafting Drafting is when you swim close to another swimmer, usually either behind or to the side of them. Drafting effectively will mean you will conserve some much-needed energy for the bike ride and run that you face ahead. By swimming close to a person swimming at a similar speed to you means that you will feel the effects of the pull in their slipstream. TIP: Swim directly behind someone. Close enough that you're almost touching their toes but not so close that you keep catching them as you swim. Admittedly this is a bit sneaky but it works. Stroke Getting the rhythm of your stroke right is important when swimming outdoors. The rhythm and glide of your stroke is what propels you in the water. You find yourself a rhythm you are comfortable with, fast will not necessarily make you fast, a slower steady rhythm is best. Also make sure you stretch those arms out fully. Master these and you'll find yourself propelling through the water like a rocket. Tip: Swim a length with your eyes closed, when you stop check whether you have swam in a straight line. Have you swum straight or have you veered toward the left or right? Repeat the process and see if there is a pattern, if you find there is you will need to adjust your stroke accordingly. Breathing Master bi-lateral breathing (breathing every 3rd stroke) alternating left to right and exhale slowly and fully. Not exhaling fully is one of the most common reasons for running out of oxygen. TIP: Practice most definitely makes perfect so dedicate some training time to the pool. Don’t think you need to constantly be training outdoors and in open water, even the professionals do most of their training in the pool. Ahead of the big day Before the event is due to take place you should most definitely practice swimming in your wetsuit. Might sound silly but a wetsuit can affect how you swim and you may need to adjust some of your techniques. It is also advisable to take part in an open water swimming session so you have had some experience in swimming in open water. Virgin Active have an open water swim training session coming up that would help you tick this off of your training list. You can find additional open water swimming tips on the Virgin Active London Triathlon website. Just remember, you've put the training in so relax and enjoy it. It will be worth all the training once you cross the finish line. Good Luck! Introduction Zone3 is one of the first British owned Triathlon brand and since 2008 has developed an unparalleled reputation for producing high quality, performance products at an affordable price tag. Whether you are an elite leading out the field or training for your first triathlon Zone3 has the formula to get you the best results. Have a browse through the site, read the reviews and most of all keep up the hard work! Where has Zone3 come from? The 2010 season firmly established Zone3 as one of the leading triathlon brands in the world. Not only did we receive the best reviews in magazines including the 10/10 220 review for the Aspire wetsuit but we also became the choice of some of the top dealers in the UK and enjoyed another sell out season. All of our products are designed in the UK, which makes us different to the other brands. We listen to our customers and sponsored athletes when developing new or updating our products and then carry out extensive testing to ensure the best possible products in terms of design and quality for the price. In the past this has required so much time that we have lacked the time to focus on the sales and marketing. We have been lucky enough to gain a cult following and many of our customers have been the triathletes ‘in the know’ who only want to wear the best. Years of research prior to launch have enabled the development of some of the highest performance race wear available. This is helped by our presence at Loughborough University and therefore being situated amongst some of the country’s best athletes and sporting facilities. There have been so many athletes involved with the development of this brand, that we have total confidence in all of the products and the initial suits in 2008 were probably the 5th or 6th version before we were completely happy to put the Zone 3 name to them. The 2011 Season! 2010 saw the launch of our groundbreaking tri suits: both our trademark top-end Aeroforce suits but also our performance Aquaflo range which offer incredible value. The 2011 season If you loved our wetsuits last year, you really should try them this year! We have also developed a limited edition Aspire wetsuit mixing the performance fabric from the Vanquish with the panel design of the Aspire. But be quick – they’ll sell out fast! Our business mission is to get this British brand on the worldwide map by 2012 and show our presence at the London Olympics. We already have some of the world’s top triathletes using our wetsuits and racing suits so feel confident that we can achieve this. With an incredibly couple of season under our belt we are looking to keep on developing great products, maintaining great prices and keeping the customer service as efficient as possible. The founder of the brand is 25 year old James Lock, an elite triathlete who not only runs the business but also trains full time and is currently preparing for another season on the international circuit in his attempt to qualify for the Olympics. To read more about James and find out how he came up with the idea please visit our blog. What is Zone3 Zone3 is a terminology used by a wide range of top-level coaches. ‘Zone3 is a threshold speed or racing pace where you are going at your fastest speed according to the distance you are travelling’ Zone3 therefore applies to every race you do. Zones 1 and 2 are predominately your training paces, but it is in Zone3 when you are in racing mode. In Zone3 you are powerful, controlled, focused and striving to complete a new challenge. Whether this be completing the distance with no stopping, making a new Personal Best or beating a fellow competitor. This is how we have developed Zone3 garments; they have been designed to give the best race results possible by help increasing your speed and comfort. Click on any of the following buttons for a physiological example of your three Zones: Discover Swimming provides swimming lessons for babies,, swimming lessons for toddlers, swimming lessons for children and swimming lessons for adults. Have a look through our site to find out more about Discover Swimming. Swimming is a life skill that everyone should possess. We take this seriously at Swimtime, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy yourself while you learn to swim with us. Our lessons for children are fun, and we seek to help your child feel absolutely safe whether it’s their first lesson, their first venture into deep water, or their first time in a more challenging class. It’s our aim that your child should progress through the STA Learn to Swim Programme at their own pace, but more importantly that they develop a love for being in the water that lasts a lifetime. If you are an adult learner, fun may not be the adjective that springs to mind when recalling your childhood lessons, but at Swimtime we think that you should enjoy your lessons just as much as our younger pupils. We want you to look forward to your time with us, and feel relaxed as you learn to swim or improve your existing swimming strokes. Find classes near you Please enter your postcode or town into our map search (above right). We look forward to seeing you in the pool soon. Our children’s group lessons are designed for children aged between 4 and 11. Classes are arranged according to your child’s experience of swimming and being in the water. To give you an idea, here’s a list of the criteria for our classes: Beginners This class is for your child if they are at least 4 years old and happy to get in the water and float independently wearing armbands. They should have no problem getting splashed by water. They will learn to become confident and advanced beginners who can jump in, enjoy putting their face in the water and start to swim on their front and back wearing armbands. Beginners plus Your child is confident in the water without armbands and can swim about 5 metres on their front and their back. Improvers Children entering Swimtime lessons at improver level will already be able to swim at least 25m on their front and back using a recognised swimming stroke. Your child will swim with their face in the water and will have learned how to breathe whilst swimming. They will swim with and without goggles. Challenge Your child can swim 400m and demonstrate three strokes with the correct breathing. In this class they will work on Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. Pupils will develop survival and rescue skills, good stroke technique, speed, and stamina. They will also have the opportunity to work on water polo or synchronised swimming skills. Master class This class is ideal for pupils who enjoy their swimming lessons with friends. They want to continue a progressive fitness programme without the pressure of a competitive environment. Youngsters who have achieved Gold Awards in skills and safety may progress to the Platinum Award in this class. Also included are survival and rescue skills, advanced swimming skills, and the option of either water polo or synchonised swimming. It is important that your child is placed in the correct group so we recommend that you get some advice from your local Swimtime representative before booking your child’s next class. Find classes near you Please enter your postcode or town into our map search (above right). We look forward to seeing you in the pool soon. Our classes for the under 4s involve you as well as your child. This helps your little one feel really secure whilst they get accustomed to being in the water. The specialist instructors running the sessions make sure they are also a lot of fun. We use various recognised and accredited programmes as a basis for these classes. In addition to being a great introduction to the water, these classes are also a great way for you to bond with your child, and meet other parents with children of a similar age to yours. Many of our parents say our classes are the sociable highlight of their week. We recommend you download Get Ready to Take the Plunge – a guide to swimming with your baby from the Swimming Teachers Association. It gives lots of water safety advice to new mums and dads. Find classes near you Please enter your postcode or town into our map search (above right). We look forward to seeing you in the pool soon. There are times when you feel your child needs just a bit of extra attention: they may be nervous about getting into the pool, require some additional teaching on a particular stroke or skill, or would like some advanced coaching to improve their personal best. And then there are those children who just respond better to private teaching. We also offer one2ones for children with special needs. The beauty of a Swimtime one2one lesson is that you can choose what you would like your child to learn, you can make the sessions fit in with your busy schedule, and you can book as many lessons as you like. You can even choose which teacher you would like to work with. Find classes near you Please enter your postcode or town into our map search (above right). We look forward to seeing you in the pool soon. Booking swimming lessons can seem incredibly daunting if you are an adult non-swimmer, however, we guarantee that picking up the phone and giving us a call will be the hardest part. Adults who learn to swim with Swimtime invariably tell us that they wish they hadn’t waited so long. Swimtime teachers are very experienced in teaching adults and will be able to reassure you and deal with any anxieties that you may have. Lessons with adults are taught on a one2one basis with a teacher who comes into the water with you. That way they can support you and demonstrate any techniques they would like you to try. You can make progress at your own pace with gentle encouragement and expert guidance. We want everyone to learn to swim, be safe, have fun, and that’s why everyone at Swimtime is passionate about swimming. We not only teach swimming, we enjoy going swimming whether just for fun, to exercise, or to compete. Some independent teachers we work with still represent Team GB at international level, others enjoy open water swimming, and there are those for whom a day without an energising dip in the pool doesn’t feel quite right. This enthusiasm is infectious and we will teach you, whatever your age or starting point. No one is too young or too old to learn: we have families where five generations enjoy lessons with us from a tiny baby to a 99-year-old great great grandparent. We believe that learning to feel at home in the water is the key to good swimming, and will always spend time making sure you or your child are comfortable before moving on to teaching the next skill or stroke technique. We think that the best teachers are not only highly qualified, but know how to engage with their pupils, how to make the lessons fun, and how to put their pupils at their ease. We know that the teachers working with us are the best because pupils and parents ask for more lessons with them by name. Oh and one more thing, we don’t believe in waiting lists, and will find a place for you or your child in a class that suits you, or start a new one to accommodate your needs. If you are a qualified, independent swimming teacher looking to work with an organisation that understands, values and appreciates swimming teachers, we’d like to hear from you. We’re looking for great swimming teachers who are: Passionate about teaching swimming Able to inspire both children and adults Willing to control and increase their own earning capacity Motivated to provide a top quality personal service Responsible and eager to acquire new skills to advance their career Qualified to internationally recognised standards We understand that independent swimming teachers have their own unique approach. After all, great teachers know how to modify their teaching style to suit the demands of their pupils, whilst conforming to industry best practice at all times. Swimtime expects teachers to have appropriate Swimming Teachers Association qualifications or ASA equivalent. All teachers will have their own CRB Enhanced Disclosure (available through the STA), lifesaving qualification (NARS), and insurance (AULT). If this sounds like what you’ve been looking for, please fill in your details on our contact form and we’ll call you for a chat.
